Gold Holds Near $4,150 as Hot CPI Keeps Fed Hike Bets Alive
Last updated: 15 October 2026, 10:30 AM IST
ASIA FX WATCH: Gold is trading near $4,146 an ounce on Thursday morning. A hot US inflation report pushed it to about $4,078 on Wednesday, then falling Treasury yields helped it win back about $68. It's still about 12% below its late-August high near $4,700. For Indian buyers, the rupee near 94.9 after four straight gains is the other story. Track both on our live gold charts.
What can move gold today
- US PPI, retail sales, jobless claims (6:00 PM IST): PPI is forecast at +0.6% on the month and 5.5% on the year, per the Dow Jones consensus reported by CNBC.
- Fed hike odds: CME FedWatch shows roughly 33% for 28 October, up from 22% before CPI. Bowman and Daly say the Fed can wait.
- Yields and dollar: The 10-year is near 5.1%, a three-week low. The dollar index is near 102, off an 18-month high.
- Oil: Crude dipped on a Reuters report that Washington is weighing easier sanctions on shadow-fleet tankers.
- Rupee: USD/INR is near 94.9 on RBI measures. India's September trade data is due today.
- Hot, but contained: CPI hit 3.7% and core 2.6%, both above forecasts. Hike odds spiked, then faded as Fed officials urged patience.
- Yield-driven rebound: Gold recovered because yields fell. If yields climb again, gold can give it back.
- Floor zone: TD Securities sees strong dip-buying between $4,000 and $4,100.
- India and Gulf: At USD/INR 94.92, 24K parity is about ₹12,654, AED 490 or SAR 500 per gram.

Why Gold Is Moving
Wednesday's CPI was hotter than forecast. Headline inflation rose to 3.7% from 3.4%, and core rose 0.3% for a second straight month. Gasoline drove most of the monthly jump, but Reuters reported that price pressure is broadening beyond energy. Gold fell 1.6% to $4,088, and FXStreet had it as low as $4,078.
Then the mood changed. Bowman, Daly and other Fed officials said the Fed can wait for clearer data, and October hike odds fell to about 33% from a 50% peak. Treasuries rallied, and the 10-year yield slid more than 20 basis points from its post-CPI high, per investingLive. Gold jumped about $40 in Asia, and Reuters via Business Recorder had spot at $4,158.63 earlier this morning.
Here's how I read it. Gold didn't recover because buyers rushed back. It recovered because yields fell, which makes the bounce fragile. TD Securities says trend-following funds sold heavily after CPI, yet strong support flows held gold above the $4,000 to $4,100 zone. That tells me the floor works. It doesn't mean the downtrend is over.
Technical Levels
The 4-hour chart is still a downtrend. Gold peaked near $4,700 in late August and has made lower highs since. It broke down on 28 September and has traded between about $4,075 and $4,230 ever since. Wednesday's dip nearly retested the bottom of that range. A close above $4,230 would be the first real sign of a breakout.
| Level | Price | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Range top | $4,206 to $4,230 | Monday's high and early-October swing highs |
| First resistance | $4,170 | Wednesday's pre-CPI peak |
| Current price | ~$4,146 | Lower half of the range |
| Key support | $4,078 | Wednesday's post-CPI low |
| Floor zone | $4,000 to $4,100 | Where TD sees strong dip-buying |
What Can Happen Next
PPI, retail sales and jobless claims land at 6:00 PM IST. These are my chart-based scenarios, not forecasts.
Soft data: Yields keep sliding and hike odds drop below 33%. Gold can retest $4,170, then $4,206.
Hot PPI (above 0.6%) or strong retail sales: Hike bets build and the rebound unwinds. Gold can slip to $4,078, with $4,000 next.
In line: Expect gold to hold $4,100 to $4,200 into the Fed's 28 October decision. Check live odds on CME FedWatch before the release.
India and Gulf Impact
Rupee: The rupee gained 31 paise to 94.86 in early trade after closing Wednesday at 95.17, its fourth straight gain, per Business Standard. That's about 2% stronger than on 7 October. The RBI's 10 October measures, including a direct dollar window for oil companies, are behind the move. On the daily chart, USD/INR sits on a rising trendline from the early-September low near 94.4, and the 96.8 area has capped it three times since May. Analysts flag 94.80 as the key level. Follow it on our live USD/INR chart.
India: At spot $4,146.50 and USD/INR 94.92, the parity values are:
| Purity | INR / gram | INR / 10 grams |
|---|---|---|
| 24K (99.9%) | ~₹12,654 | ~₹1,26,540 |
| 22K | ~₹11,600 | ~₹1,16,000 |
| 18K | ~₹9,491 | ~₹94,910 |
Parity values exclude import duty, 3% GST, making charges and dealer margins. At Wednesday's rupee close of 95.17, the same gold would have been about ₹33 per gram higher on 24K.
Shop rates run higher than parity. India.com lists 24K in Mumbai near ₹14,825 per gram, about 17% above parity, because of duty, taxes and local premium. HDFC Securities' Saumil Gandhi says the stronger rupee is weighing on domestic prices.
Gulf: The dirham (3.6725) and riyal (3.75) are pegged to the dollar, so Gulf gold follows the dollar price. At $4,146.50, 24K parity is about AED 490 or SAR 500 per gram, before making charges and VAT.
