Gold Holds Near $4,194 Ahead of US CPI: Key Levels
Gold Holds Near $4,194 Ahead of US CPI: Key Levels
Last updated: 13 October 2026, 11:05 AM IST
ASIA FX WATCH: Gold is holding near $4,194 an ounce on Tuesday morning. It's a pause, not a recovery. The metal is still about 25% below its record of $5,589.38 from 28 January, and it lost more than 6% in September as the Fed raised rates and Treasury yields surged. US CPI, due Wednesday 14 October at 6:00 PM IST, will help decide whether the Fed hikes again on 28 October. Follow the move on our live gold charts.
- Price: Gold is near $4,194, up about $30 in the latest 4-hour candle and about 25% below its January record.
- Driver: Gold is trading Fed hike odds, not haven demand. In late September, hike bets near 70% helped knock gold down almost 4% in one session.
- Since then: Soft inflation and weak jobs data cut October hike odds to about 23% by 6 October. Gold steadied above $4,100.
- Chart: Price is testing the top of a falling channel. A 4-hour close above $4,214 is the first sign of a breakout. A drop below $4,133 puts $4,070 in play.
- CPI forecasts: Headline 3.6% and core 2.5% year on year. Core, forecast at 0.2% on the month, is what gold will trade.
- Rupee: USD/INR fell 0.56% to 95.22, which takes about ₹72 off each gram of 24K parity today.
Gold has traded between $4,133 and $4,214 since 7 October. Buyers keep defending the lower end, and sellers keep showing up near the top.
At a 2.9% real yield, $4,194 parked in Treasuries earns about $122 a year above inflation. An ounce of gold earns nothing.
Core CPI. A reading above the 0.2% forecast keeps the 28 October hike alive. A softer one takes pressure off yields.
Until real yields fall, gold rallies are more likely to fade than extend.
Gold Market Snapshot: 13 October 2026
Gold has bounced about 3% from its early-October low near $4,070. The bounce looks like selling pressure running out. It doesn't yet look like new buying.

How We Got Here
Gold peaked at $5,589.38 on 28 January. The steepest part of the slide has come in the last six weeks. The Fed raised rates in mid-September, its first hike in over three years, and signalled more could follow. Yields jumped, the dollar firmed, and gold lost more than 6% in September, according to CNBC.
The worst day came in late September. A bond rout and rising hike bets pushed gold down almost 4% in one session, with Investing.com putting October hike odds near 70% at the time.
Then the data turned. Softer inflation numbers on 1 October cut October hike odds to 28%. Weak September payrolls, just +29,000 with unemployment at 4.2% per the BLS, pushed them to about 23% by 6 October, according to rate swap pricing. Gold steadied above $4,100.
It isn't out of the woods. The Fed's own minutes signalled it may not be done, and gold closed at $4,109.90 on 7 October, its lowest since early August, per 24/7 Wall St.
Why Gold Isn't Rallying
Geopolitical stress usually supports gold. This time it hasn't, and inflation is the reason. Energy prices are elevated and the Middle East situation is unresolved, as Kiplinger notes. Higher oil feeds CPI, higher CPI feeds hike bets, and hike bets lift yields and the dollar. All three work against gold.
The yield math is simple. With the 10-year real yield near 2.9%, $4,194 in Treasuries earns about $122 a year above inflation. An ounce of gold earns nothing. You can follow the real yield on FRED. The dollar also sits near multi-year highs, which makes gold costlier for buyers outside the US.
What the Street Is Saying
Banks are cutting targets, but few are calling for a collapse. Goldman Sachs trimmed its year-end target to $4,900. HSBC lowered its 2026 average forecast to $4,490 and says gold may be near a bottom. It also expects central banks to resume buying near or below $4,000. China has bought gold for 23 straight months. These figures come from the 24/7 Wall St report linked above.
That makes $4,000 a line worth watching. Official buying is the one source of demand that doesn't care about real yields. But it's a forecast, not a fact, so treat it as a possible floor rather than a guarantee.
Chart Levels to Watch
On the 4-hour chart, gold has dropped inside a falling channel since early September. The high came near $4,500 in the first week of the month. Lower lows followed, first near $4,110 at the end of September, then near $4,070 in early October.
Since 7 October, gold has built a tight base between $4,133 and $4,214 and is now pressing the channel's upper line. A 4-hour close above $4,214 would be the first real sign of a breakout. It hasn't happened yet, so I wouldn't call this a trend change.
| Level | Price | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Breakout trigger | $4,214 | Top of the range and channel edge |
| Current price | ~$4,194 | Just under the trigger |
| First support | $4,163 | Low of the latest 4-hour candle |
| Range floor | $4,133 | Bottom of the 7 October base |
| Key support | $4,070 | Early-October swing low |
| Round-number floor | $4,000 | Where HSBC expects central banks to return |
What Can Happen After CPI
The report lands at 8:30 AM Eastern, which is 6:00 PM IST on Wednesday. Investing.com's preview shows forecasts of 0.6% on the month (3.6% year on year) for headline CPI and 0.2% (2.5% year on year) for core. Headline is expected to run hotter on energy while core cools. Gold will trade core.
Core at 0.2% or lower: This would back up the weak jobs data. An October hike looks unlikely and yields can ease. Gold can break $4,214 and aim for the $4,300 area, where the late-September drop began.
Core above 0.2%: October hike odds jump from the roughly 23% seen on 6 October. The last time hike bets surged, gold fell almost 4% in one session. A retest of $4,133, then $4,070, is the risk.
Hot headline, tame core: Expect a muted reaction and more range trading until the Fed meeting.
These are my chart-based scenarios, not forecasts. Check live odds on CME FedWatch before the release, because the 23% figure is from 6 October. Official data is on the BLS CPI page. The next Fed decision is on 28 October, per the FOMC calendar.
India and Gulf Angle
Rupee: USD/INR is down 0.56% at 95.22, a sharp pullback from the early-October high near 96.81. That stands out because the dollar is near multi-year highs elsewhere. It suggests the move is rupee-specific rather than a broad dollar sell-off. On the Fibonacci levels drawn on the chart, 95.27 is the first resistance, then 95.57. Support is at 94.92, and a daily close below it opens the September low near 94.3. Our live USD/INR chart tracks it in real time.
India: Indian gold prices depend on the dollar price, USD/INR and local taxes. From today's open of 95.76, the rupee gain takes about ₹72 off each gram of 24K parity. At spot $4,194 and USD/INR 95.22, parity values are:
| Purity | INR / gram | INR / 10 grams |
|---|---|---|
| 24K (99.9%) | ~₹12,842 | ~₹1,28,420 |
| 22K | ~₹11,772 | ~₹1,17,720 |
| 18K | ~₹9,631 | ~₹96,310 |
These are parity values before import duty, 3% GST and making charges. Your jeweller's rate will be higher.
Gulf: The UAE dirham and Saudi riyal are pegged to the dollar, so Gulf gold follows the dollar price. At current levels, 24K parity is about AED 495 or SAR 506 per gram, before making charges and VAT.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold price today?
On 13 October 2026, spot gold is trading near $4,194 per ounce.
Why isn't gold rising strongly?
US real yields are near 2.9% and the Fed raised rates in September. Bonds pay well, and gold pays nothing.
When is US CPI and why does it matter?
It's due Wednesday 14 October at 6:00 PM IST. A hot core number raises the odds of another Fed hike, which is bad for gold.
How far is gold from its record high?
The record is $5,589.38, set on 28 January 2026. At about $4,194, gold is roughly 25% below it.
