Gold Slips Near $4,120 as Iran Peace Hopes Fade, Fed Looms

ASIA FX WATCH: Gold is trading near $4,115 an ounce on Wednesday morning, after three straight daily losses. It's about 12% below its late-August high near $4,700. Oil headlines from the Iran conflict are driving the day-to-day swings, while the Fed is widely expected to leave rates unchanged on 28 October. For Indian buyers, the rupee's winning streak is trimming domestic prices. Track the live price on our live gold charts.
What can move gold today
- Oil and Iran headlines: Gold followed crude on Tuesday. Peace-talk reports pushed oil down and gold up, then a diplomat played down a deal and both reversed. Brent is near $110.
- Fed pricing: Markets see under a 17% chance of an October hike but about 85% for another one later this year. The Fed's blackout began Saturday, so no speakers.
- Treasury yields: The 10-year is near 5.12% after weak US housing data. A US 20-year bond auction is due today.
- Dollar: The dollar index is steady near 101.8.
- US oil inventories: Weekly crude stockpile data is due today and can move oil, and gold with it.
- Rupee: It opened at 94.78, an eighth straight daily gain, on Jio Platforms IPO inflows and RBI support.
- Oil is the swing factor: Peace hopes lift gold because they cool inflation. War headlines hurt it because they raise hike risk.
- A Fed hold is priced in: The real debate is whether another hike comes before year-end.
- Weak US data didn't help: Housing numbers pulled yields lower, but gold still fell. Inflation worries are outweighing growth worries.
- India and Gulf: At USD/INR 94.55, 24K parity is about ₹12,509 per gram, AED 486 or SAR 496.

Why Gold Is Moving
Gold has lost more than 1% this week, and Tuesday showed why. Reports of peace talks sent oil lower, and gold bounced to about $4,154 as yields and the dollar eased. Then a diplomat dismissed claims that a deal was close, oil recovered, and gold gave the gains back to about $4,122, according to Guardian Gold's Kitco-based summary and Investing.com.
The pattern matters. Gold isn't trading as a war hedge right now. It's trading inflation. Peace means cheaper oil, lower inflation and fewer Fed hikes, which helps gold. A flare-up means pricier oil and more hike risk, which hurts it. That explains why gold has fallen about a fifth since the US-Iran fighting began in late February, in a conflict that would normally support it.
The Fed isn't adding fuel. Markets see under a 17% chance of a hike on 27-28 October, but about 85% for another one later this year. Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks on Friday didn't change that. Even soft US data, with housing starts down and pending home sales at a record low, only nudged the 10-year yield to about 5.12%. That tells me markets care more about inflation than growth right now.
Technical Levels
Gold is still in a downtrend from the late-August high near $4,700. Since the 28 September breakdown it has mostly traded between about $4,075 and $4,230. Today's low of $4,106.52 sits just above the first support area, and Tuesday's high near $4,154 capped the bounce.
| Level | Price | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Range top | $4,206 to $4,230 | 12 October high and early-October swing highs |
| Resistance | $4,154 to $4,170 | Tuesday's high and the mid-October peak |
| Current price | ~$4,115 | Lower half of the range |
| First support | $4,104 to $4,113 | Today's low zone |
| Key support | $4,078 | 14 October post-CPI low |
| Floor zone | $4,000 to $4,100 | Where TD Securities saw strong dip-buying |
What Can Happen Next
These are my chart-based scenarios, not forecasts.
Peace talks progress, oil falls: Yields ease and gold can retest $4,154 to $4,170, then $4,206.
Talks stall, oil spikes: Hike bets build and gold can slide toward $4,104, then $4,078.
No major news: Expect gold to stay inside $4,100 to $4,170 into the Fed meeting. A hold is expected, so the tone on December matters more than the decision itself. Check live odds on CME FedWatch and the meeting dates on the Fed calendar.
India and Gulf Impact
Rupee: The rupee opened at 94.78 on Wednesday, its eighth straight daily gain, helped by dollar inflows tied to the Jio Platforms IPO and RBI support, per NewsBytes. It has since strengthened further, and Investing.com's live quote was 94.55 at the time of writing. That's more than 2% stronger than on 7 October, when it was near 96.75. I've used 94.55 for the parity numbers below. Follow it on our live USD/INR chart.
India: At spot $4,115 and USD/INR 94.55, the parity values are:
| Purity | INR / gram | INR / 10 grams |
|---|---|---|
| 24K (99.9%) | ~₹12,509 | ~₹1,25,090 |
| 22K | ~₹11,467 | ~₹1,14,670 |
| 18K | ~₹9,382 | ~₹93,820 |
Parity values exclude import duty, 3% GST, making charges and dealer margins.
Shop rates run higher. Business Today lists 24K in Mumbai at about ₹1,46,080 per 10 grams, and MCX futures near ₹1,46,179. That's roughly 17% above parity, because of duty, taxes and local premium. A stronger rupee is one reason domestic prices have slipped even as festive demand builds.
Gulf: The dirham (3.6725) and riyal (3.75) are pegged to the dollar, so Gulf gold follows the dollar price. At $4,115, 24K parity is about AED 486 or SAR 496 per gram, before making charges and VAT.
