ASIA FX WATCH: USD/INR today is near 95.00 after opening at 94.93, flat on Friday's 94.94 close. Brent is near $115 a barrel (BlackBull showed $114.94 at 10:36 AM IST, down 2.05%). The Jio Platforms IPO flows that helped the rupee last week are fading, with allotment today and listing on Wednesday. That leaves the pair right at the 95 mark, with PTI showing 94.98 in early trade. The Fed decides on Wednesday and a hold is expected. For NRIs, every paisa matters: $10,000 converts to about ₹9,50,000 at 95.00. Track it on our live USD/INR chart.
What can move USD/INR today
- Crude oil: Brent is near $115 ($114.94, down 2.05%) after a third straight weekly surge. WTI is near $101. Higher oil raises India's dollar import bill.
- Jio IPO flows fade: Allotment is today and listing is on Wednesday 28 October. The foreign inflows that supported the rupee last week are likely to ease.
- Fed on 28 October: A hold at 3.75% to 4.00% is expected. The tone on a December hike matters more.
- Exporter selling: Exporters are selling dollars on every uptick, which has capped the pair near 95.
- Range: The rupee traded between 94.32 and 94.97 last week and closed Friday at 94.94 (Reuters via Business Recorder).
- Oil exposure: India imports about 88% of its crude, and the import bill rose 46% to $90.6 billion in April to September (PPAC via ThePrint).
- Fed: A hold is expected on Wednesday after September's quarter-point hike.
- NRI maths: At 95.00, $10,000 gives about ₹9,50,000. At last Wednesday's 94.38 it gave ₹9,43,800.

USD/INR Today: Why 95 Is the Line
The rupee ended last week little changed after a 1.4% gain the week before, per Reuters via Business Recorder. It traded between 94.32 and 94.97. Jio Platforms IPO inflows pushed it to the firmer end of that range. Allotment is today and listing is on Wednesday 28 October, so Business Recorder expected a weaker open and said the risk balance tilts to the downside.
The rupee opened flat at 94.93 and slipped 5 paise to 94.98 in early trade, per PTI. Trading Economics shows 95.005. Exporters are selling dollars on every uptick, per NewsBytes, while importers use cheaper hedging. So what: the pair sits on the 95 line, where sellers have shown up. A sustained close above it would signal renewed pressure, and the RBI is likely to step in if the move turns sharp.
Why Crude Oil Matters for the Rupee
India imports about 88% of its crude (88.1% in April to September), and the import bill rose 46% to $90.6 billion, per PPAC data reported by ThePrint. The rise was price-driven, because volumes were broadly flat. Brent hovered near $114 on Friday and was on track for a third straight weekly surge after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. On Monday it fell about 2%: BlackBull showed $114.94 at 10:36 AM IST, down 2.05%, while WTI traded near $101.0 to $101.5. Both stay well above $100, as Rio Times notes.
The RBI has blunted the direct effect. Since 12 October its special window has met the entire daily dollar needs of three state-run oil firms (IOC, BPCL and HPCL), so their demand is not a direct factor for the rupee. The effect still comes through sentiment, because oil above $100 makes investors cautious on emerging-market currencies. So what: a Brent rebound above $120, which Rio Times flags as the next risk, would build pressure on the rupee.
What the Fed Decision Could Mean
The Fed meets on 27 to 28 October, per the FOMC calendar. It is expected to hold at 3.75% to 4.00% after a quarter-point hike in September. Traders still saw a 78% chance of a December hike on Friday, according to FXStreet citing CME FedWatch. US PCE inflation data follows on Thursday 29 October at 8:30 AM ET (6:00 PM IST), per the BEA schedule.
So what: a hold on its own changes little for USD/INR. A signal that a December hike is likely would lift US yields and the dollar, and that would push the rupee through 95. A patient tone would give it room toward 94.50.
RBI Measures Still in Place
The RBI's 10 October package gave IOC, BPCL and HPCL a dollar window from 12 October and added a 20% cash reserve on rupee derivative contracts above $2 million, per BusinessToday. The rupee had closed at 96.73 on 9 October, near its all-time low of 96.96 from May. It then gained about 2.4% to a six-week best of 94.38 on Wednesday. The RBI also rejected every bid at last week's T-bill auction as the 10-year yield hit 7.44%, per Business Standard. So what: the RBI is defending both the rupee and borrowing costs, and oil keeps testing it.
