ASIA FX WATCH: Oil is the story. Brent traded near $114 on Friday after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia, and that pushed the rupee to 94.93 per dollar, its second straight fall. Gold price today is $3,996, below $4,000 for the first time since mid-July, after its worst week since June. Both moves follow one chain: dearer oil lifts inflation, and that keeps the Fed tough. The Fed meets on 27 to 28 October. Markets reopen Monday with the risk unresolved.

Key Takeaways (24 October 2026):
  • Rupee first: USD/INR closed at 94.93, down 12 paise, with Brent at $114.31 (PTI).
  • Gold below $4,000: Spot fell under the mark for the first time since mid-July and lost about 4% on the week (CNBC, Reuters).
  • Fed risk: December hike odds reached 78% ahead of the Fed meeting and PCE data (FXStreet / CME FedWatch).
  • India bonds: The 10-year yield closed at 7.44% on Wednesday, the highest since November 2022 (Business Standard).
  • NRI maths: $10,000 converts to about ₹9,49,300 at 94.93, or ₹5,500 more than at Wednesday's 94.38 close.

USD/INR: Why Oil Hits the Rupee First

India imports about 88–90% of its crude and pays in dollars, per PPAC data reported by ThePrint (88.1% for April–September 2026) and CII-EY (nearly 90%). The import bill rose 46% to $90.6 billion in April to September. When Brent rises, importers need more dollars and the rupee weakens. Brent traded at $114.31 on Friday as Saudi-Houthi tension kept supply fears alive, and the rupee fell for a second day, per PTI.

The RBI has been the rupee's shield. Its 10 October measures, including a dollar window for oil companies, helped the rupee gain about 2% from 96.75 on 7 October to a six-week best of 94.38 on Wednesday. Since then it has given back 55 paise. Kotak NEO's Anindya Banerjee says crude moving toward $120 would test the 94 to 97 range, as Revoi reported. So what: if Brent holds above $110, that shield gets tested.

Bonds point the same way. The RBI rejected every bid at Wednesday's T-bill auction and the 10-year yield rose to 7.44%, per Business Standard. So what: for NRIs, the rupee at 94.93 gives about ₹9,49,300 on $10,000 before fees and TCS. That is ₹5,500 more than on Wednesday.

Gold Price Today: Why It Broke $4,000

Spot gold fell under $4,000 on Friday and ended the week about 4% lower, per CNBC (Reuters). Close printed at $3,995.81 (OANDA / StockInvest.us / ADVFN). FXStreet had it as low as $3,975, a three-month low. The trigger was the same oil move. Dearer oil lifts inflation, so the Fed has less room to ease, and FXStreet / CME FedWatch say December hike odds reached 78% on 23 October. Gold pays no interest, so it loses ground to bonds when hikes look likely.

One detail matters. The US 10-year yield fell about 16 basis points to near 4.96% on Thursday, per Saxo, and gold still dropped. Goodreturns says a sell-off in tech and AI shares pushed traders to sell metals to cover losses. So what: part of this fall is forced selling. It can overshoot, and it can also run until funds finish raising cash.

What the Fed Week Means

The Fed decides on 28 October, per the FOMC calendar, and US PCE inflation data follows on Thursday 29 October at 8:30 AM ET (6:00 PM IST), per the BEA schedule. Hot PCE would hurt gold. A soft print would cut the 78% odds. So what: a hawkish Fed also lifts the dollar, adding to rupee weakness. Live odds: CME FedWatch.

Key Levels for Monday

AssetLevelWhy it matters
USD/INR96.80Prior high / resistance area (52-week high ~96.825 in May; retested near 96.78–96.90 in early October)
USD/INR95.00Round-number psychological resistance. A close above it shows oil pressure building
USD/INR94.80Analyst-watched support/resistance zone (Revoi and technical notes)
USD/INR94.38Wednesday close, the rupee's six-week best (PTI)
Gold$4,000Lost on Friday. Now resistance
Gold$3,975Three-month low (FXStreet)
Gold$3,900Next support flagged by FXStreet

Weekend trade is thin, so Monday can gap. So what: avoid large orders at the open.

What Happens Next

Oil stays near $114: USD/INR tests 95.00. Gold tests $3,975, then $3,900.

Oil falls on de-escalation: The rupee recovers toward 94.38 to 94.80. Gold can retake $4,000.

Hot PCE data: The dollar firms and hike bets build. Both gold and the rupee come under more pressure.

India, Gulf and US Impact

India: The parity formula is price per ounce ÷ 31.1035 × USD/INR, which gives the rupee price per gram before duty and GST. At $3,995.81 and USD/INR 94.93:

PurityINR / gramINR / 10 grams
24K (99.9%)~₹12,195~₹1,21,950
22K~₹11,179~₹1,11,790
18K~₹9,147~₹91,470

Shop and MCX rates run well above parity because of duty and local premium. So what: use parity as a base, then add duty and GST.

Gulf: The dirham (3.6725) and riyal (3.75) are pegged to the dollar, so Gulf gold tracks the dollar price. At $3,995.81, 24K parity is about AED 472 or SAR 482 per gram, and 22K is about AED 432, before making charges and VAT.

US: One ounce at $3,995.81 equals about $128.47 per gram.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did gold fall below $4,000?
Oil near $114 raised inflation fears and Fed hike bets. Funds also sold gold to cover tech-stock losses.

Why does higher oil weaken the rupee?
India imports about 88–90% of its crude. Higher Brent means a bigger dollar bill, so importers buy more dollars and the rupee falls.

Will the rupee fall further on Monday?
It depends on oil. If Brent holds near $114, 95.00 is the next test. If oil falls, the rupee can recover toward 94.80.

What does the Fed meeting mean for gold?
The Fed decides on 28 October. December hike odds were 78% on Friday (23 Oct). A hawkish tone adds pressure on gold.

What is 24K gold per gram in India before taxes?
Parity is about ₹12,195 per gram at $3,995.81 and USD/INR 94.93. Shop prices are higher because of duty, GST and local premium.
