ASIA FX WATCH: Gold is trading near $4,164 an ounce on Wednesday morning, little changed from Tuesday's settlement and about 25% below its January record near $5,590. Monday's rally to $4,206 didn't hold. Everything now waits for US CPI at 6:00 PM IST, which will help decide whether the Fed raises rates again this year. Indian buyers have a second story to watch: the rupee jumped to 94.93 in early trade, which lowers the rupee cost of gold. Track the move on our live gold charts.

⚡ Flash Alert

What can move gold today

  • US CPI, 6:00 PM IST (8:30 AM ET): Forecasts are 3.6% headline and 2.5% core, both year on year. Core is expected at 0.2% on the month.
  • Fed hike odds: CME FedWatch shows 23% for October and 88% for December. NY Fed's Williams expects one more hike this year.
  • Treasury yields: The 10-year ended Tuesday at 5.209%, down 3.9 basis points as last week's bond selloff eased.
  • Oil and the Middle East: Brent is near $106. Houthi attacks on a Saudi airport and threats to refineries keep supply fears alive.
  • Dollar: The dollar index is near 101.9 and a touch softer, a small help for gold.
  • Rupee and India yields: USD/INR is near 94.93 after RBI intervention, and India's 10-year yield eased to 7.35% on 13 October, just off a three-year high. A stronger rupee trims the rupee price of gold.
  • Thursday: US PPI and retail sales follow CPI, so volatility may not end tonight.
Key Takeaways (14 October 2026):
  • Range-bound: Gold has traded roughly between $4,133 and $4,214 since 7 October. Today's $4,164 sits in the middle of that box.
  • Rejected near the top: Monday's $4,206.01 was the highest since 2 October, but spot settled Tuesday at $4,161.20.
  • December matters more than October: A December hike is already 88% priced. CPI needs to surprise to change that.
  • India: At USD/INR 94.93, 24K parity is about ₹12,709 per gram, roughly ₹58 less than at Tuesday's rupee close.
  • Gulf: Dollar-pegged parity works out near AED 492 or SAR 502 per gram.

Why Gold Is Moving

Monday looked like the start of a bounce. Gold touched $4,206.01 as the dollar softened and oil slid after an unconfirmed energy ceasefire announcement, according to Discovery Alert. It didn't last. Spot settled Tuesday at $4,161.20, down 0.3%, per Investing.com. Gold early in Asia on Wednesday was little changed near $4,161.

The bigger driver is the rate path. Treasury yields are retreating from last week's highs, with the 10-year at 5.209% on Tuesday. That's help for gold, but 5.2% is still a lot to give up by holding a metal that pays nothing. The Fed isn't helping either. Williams said he expects one more hike this year and none needed in 2027. Waller said rising yields reflect stronger growth and that inflation expectations remain anchored.

Here's the part many traders miss. The market already prices an 88% chance of a December hike, per CME FedWatch. October is mostly off the table at 23%. So a hot CPI mostly confirms what's priced. A soft one is the real surprise, because it would put the December hike in doubt. That's why gold needs a cooler core number to break higher, and why a hot one may not cause as much damage as it did in late September.

Oil keeps the inflation risk alive. Brent is near $106, and the Houthis have warned of more attacks on airports and refineries after strikes at a Saudi airport over the weekend. Normally that kind of stress supports gold. This year, higher oil feeds inflation, inflation feeds hike bets, and hike bets weigh on gold.

Technical Levels

Gold has been boxed between roughly $4,133 and $4,214 on the 4-hour chart since 7 October. Monday's $4,206 high stopped just under the top of that box. Price has since rotated back to the middle. Nothing has broken yet, so I'm treating this as a range until proven otherwise.

What Can Happen Next

CPI lands at 6:00 PM IST. These are my chart-based scenarios, not forecasts. For reference, forecasts compiled by Investing.com are 0.6% on the month for headline and 0.2% for core.

Core at 0.2% or lower: Doubt grows over the December hike and yields can ease again. Gold can clear $4,206 and test $4,214. A 4-hour close above that opens the way toward $4,300.

Core above 0.2%: The hike story hardens and October odds can jump from 23%. Gold can slide to $4,133, then $4,110 and $4,070.

Hot headline, tame core: Expect a muted reaction and more range trading into Thursday's PPI and retail sales.

Check the live odds before the release, because the 23% and 88% figures will move. Official numbers are on the BLS CPI page, and the next Fed decision is on 28 October per the FOMC calendar.

India and Gulf Impact

Rupee: The rupee gained 44 paise to 94.92 in early trade on Wednesday, supported by RBI intervention, according to Business Standard. It closed Tuesday at 95.36, its third straight gain, and is now quoted near 94.93. That level is close to the Fibonacci support I flagged on yesterday's USD/INR chart. If the rupee holds below it, the September low near 94.3 comes into view. A bounce back above 95.27 would take some of the shine off. India's 10-year bond yield eased 4 basis points to 7.35% on 13 October, according to Trading Economics. That's just off a three-year high hit this week after the RBI raised its repo rate to 5.50% and signalled more tightening. A hawkish RBI is one reason the rupee has been firm. Follow it on our live USD/INR chart.

India: Indian gold prices depend on the dollar price, USD/INR and local taxes. At spot $4,164 and USD/INR 94.93, the pure parity values are:

PurityINR / gramINR / 10 grams
24K (99.9%)~₹12,709~₹1,27,090
22K~₹11,650~₹1,16,500
18K~₹9,532~₹95,320

Parity values exclude import duty, 3% GST, making charges and dealer margins. At Tuesday's rupee close of 95.36, the same gold would have been about ₹58 per gram higher on 24K.

Don't compare parity with the market rate directly. Goodreturns had MCX gold just under ₹1.49 lakh per 10 grams on Wednesday morning, roughly 17% above the parity figure above. The gap is import duty, local premium and other costs that parity ignores. What matters for buyers is the direction: a stronger rupee and a lower dollar price both pull domestic rates down.

Gulf: The UAE dirham (3.6725) and Saudi riyal (3.75) are pegged to the dollar, so Gulf gold follows the dollar price. At $4,164, 24K parity is about AED 492 or SAR 502 per gram before making charges and VAT. With Brent near $106 and Houthi threats on Saudi infrastructure, Gulf buyers are watching oil as closely as gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the gold price today?
On 14 October 2026, spot gold is trading near $4,164 per ounce, close to Tuesday's settlement of $4,161.20.

When is US CPI and why does it matter for gold?
It's due at 6:00 PM IST on 14 October. Core inflation shapes Fed hike expectations, and hike expectations move yields and the dollar, which drive gold.

How does the rupee affect gold prices in India?
Gold is priced in dollars. A stronger rupee means fewer rupees per dollar, so the domestic price falls even if the dollar price doesn't move.

What is 24K gold worth per gram in India today?
Pure parity is about ₹12,709 per gram at spot $4,164 and USD/INR 94.93. Retail and MCX prices are higher because of duty, GST and premiums.
