How Much Gold Can You Bring From Dubai to India in 2026? 40g Is Now Worth ₹5.4 Lakh

If you live in the UAE and fly home for Diwali, your duty-free gold allowance is now worth five times what it was. Under India's Baggage Rules, 2026, a woman who has lived abroad for more than a year can bring 40 grams of jewellery duty-free, and a man can bring 20 grams. The old rupee caps of ₹1 lakh and ₹50,000 are gone. At today's price, 40 grams of 22K gold is worth about ₹5.35 lakh in India.
- Duty-free jewellery: 40g for women, 20g for men and other passengers. Weight only, no value cap, since 2 February 2026.
- You must have lived abroad for more than one year. A holiday shopper does not get this allowance.
- Bars and coins are never duty-free. Eligible passengers can bring up to 1kg by paying 15% duty (since May 2026).
- 22K gold is about 11% cheaper in Dubai today: about ₹11,899 a gram vs ₹13,385 in India.
- Dhanteras is tomorrow, Friday, 6 November, and Diwali is Sunday, 8 November.
What changed in 2026
The government notified the Baggage Rules, 2026 on 2 February. The weight limits stayed the same, but the value caps were removed. Under the old 2016 rules, a woman could bring 40 grams, but only up to ₹1 lakh in value. A man could bring 20 grams, up to ₹50,000.
That old cap had become almost useless. At today's 22K price of ₹13,385 a gram, ₹1 lakh buys less than 7.5 grams. ₹50,000 buys less than 4 grams. Now customs officers check only the weight.

How much do you actually save buying in Dubai?
On Thursday morning, 5 November, Dubai Jewellery Group's rate for 22K gold was AED 461.75 a gram, after a sharp jump that took gold to a two-week high. With the rupee near 94.64 per dollar and the dirham pegged at 3.6725, that is about ₹11,899 a gram. In India, 22K was ₹13,385 a gram.
| 22K gold | Dubai (in ₹) | India | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | ₹11,899 | ₹13,385 | ₹1,486 |
| 20 grams (men) | ₹2,37,985 | ₹2,67,700 | ₹29,715 |
| 40 grams (women) | ₹4,75,970 | ₹5,35,400 | ₹59,430 |
My read: a couple flying home together can bring 60 grams of jewellery duty-free and save roughly ₹89,000 on the gold rate alone. That is real money. But the gap is only on the metal. Dubai jewellery carries 5% VAT and its own making charges, and Indian jewellery carries 3% GST. Ask both shops for an itemised bill with gold rate, weight and making charges listed separately, then compare the final amount.
Bringing gold bars or coins? Do the maths first
Bars, biscuits and coins get no duty-free allowance. An eligible passenger (Indian origin or Indian passport, at least six months abroad) can bring up to 1kg of gold by declaring it and paying duty in foreign currency. Since May 2026 that duty is 15%, up from 6%.
Here is a rough example for a 100-gram 24K bar. At AED 498.75 a gram, it costs about ₹12.85 lakh in Dubai. Add 15% duty of about ₹1.93 lakh and you are near ₹14.78 lakh. In India, 100 grams of 24K was ₹14.60 lakh on the same day. So after the 15% duty, a bar from Dubai can actually cost you about ₹18,000 more. Customs also uses its own tariff value, not your invoice, so your duty could be a little different.
What counts and what does not
- Counts: jewellery you will wear, in gold, silver or platinum, with or without stones. Only the gold weight counts.
- Does not count: bars, coins, biscuits and bullion.
- Cannot be pooled: each passenger qualifies on their own. A child's or spouse's allowance cannot be added to yours.
- Wedding jewellery you will take back: ask Customs for a Temporary Baggage Import Certificate (Form CBD-IV) on arrival.
How to clear Customs without trouble
- Keep the original invoice and purity certificate in your hand luggage.
- File your declaration (Form CBD-I) on the ATITHI app up to three days before you land.
- Use the Green Channel only if you are within your allowance.
- Above the limit, or carrying bars or coins? Walk through the Red Channel and pay the duty.
- Do not hide gold. Undeclared gold can be seized, fined and lead to prosecution.
