US Midterms 2026: What the Result Means for Gold, Rupee and NRIs
By Om Kumar, Markets Editor · Published: 2 November 2026, 1:00 PM IST
Americans vote in the US midterm elections on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, and the results will start arriving while India sleeps. The first polls close at 4:30 AM IST on Wednesday, 4 November. By the time Indian markets open, traders will have a first read on who controls the US Congress. Gold is near $3,909 an ounce, the rupee is near 94.90 per dollar and Brent crude is around $111. Here is what each outcome could mean for gold, the rupee and NRIs sending money home.
- Voting covers all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats.
- Prediction markets give Democrats about a 94% chance of winning the House and about 69% for the Senate (Polymarket, 30 October).
- A Democratic win is largely priced in. A Republican sweep would be the biggest surprise for the dollar and gold.
- For India, oil and the Iran conflict after the vote may matter more than the result itself.
US midterm election timings in IST
| Event | US Eastern time | India time (IST) |
|---|---|---|
| First polls close (parts of Indiana and Kentucky) | 6:00 PM, 3 Nov | 4:30 AM, Wed 4 Nov |
| Most Michigan polls close | 8:00 PM, 3 Nov | 6:30 AM, Wed 4 Nov |
| California polls close | 11:00 PM, 3 Nov | 9:30 AM, Wed 4 Nov |
| First US stock session with results | 9:30 AM, 4 Nov | 8:00 PM, Wed 4 Nov |
Times can change on the night. Close Senate races, or a possible Georgia runoff on 1 December, could delay the final count.
Who is expected to win?
Republicans hold the Senate 53 to 47 today, so Democrats need a net gain of four seats. Vice President JD Vance breaks a 50-50 tie. In the House, Democrats need only a few seats for a 218-seat majority. Prediction markets on 30 October gave Democrats about a 94% chance in the House and 69% in the Senate. Morgan Stanley now calls the Senate a toss-up with a slight Democratic edge.
Four scenarios for gold, the dollar and the rupee
| Outcome | Market odds | Dollar | Gold | Rupee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Democratic sweep, quick count | About 66% | Small move, already priced | Mild support if yields ease | Steady, oil decides |
| Democratic House, Republican Senate | About 27% | Limited reaction | Neutral | Neutral |
| Republican sweep | About 9% | Likely stronger | Pressure from higher yields | Weaker, toward 95.30 |
| Slow or disputed count | Hard to price | Volatile | Safe-haven buying | Volatile |

What it means for gold
Gold fell below $4,000 last week and touched its lowest level since October 2025. It is bouncing near $3,909 on Monday. The bigger weight on gold is not the election. It is the chance of another US rate hike in December. The Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October, but two members voted for a hike. US inflation is 3.7%, and the 10-year Treasury yield is close to 5%.
My read: A clean Democratic win would likely mean gridlock in Washington. That makes big new spending harder, which can calm bond yields. Lower yields help gold. A Republican sweep is the risk case. Markets could expect more spending and more borrowing, pushing yields and the dollar up and gold down. A slow or disputed count is the one outcome that could bring back safe-haven buying quickly.
What it means for the rupee
The rupee opened near 94.89 per dollar on Monday after closing at 94.95 on Friday. Emkay Global says the midterms may matter more for geopolitics than for markets directly. Its 30 October note warned that a renewed escalation in the Iran conflict after the vote could hurt India's balance of payments, the rupee and Indian shares through higher oil prices.
India buys most of its oil in dollars, so every jump in Brent puts pressure on the rupee. If the election passes without fresh strikes on Iran, oil's risk premium could start to fade. That would help the rupee more than any vote count.
What NRIs should watch
- NRIs in the USA: At 94.95, $1,000 buys about ₹94,950. A Republican surprise or an oil spike could push the dollar higher against the rupee. There is no need to rush a transfer before the vote.
- NRIs in the Gulf: The dirham, Saudi riyal and Qatari riyal are pegged to the dollar, so your rupee value moves with USD/INR. One dirham is about ₹25.85 at 94.95.
- Gold buyers in India: Local prices depend on both the dollar price of gold and the rupee. A weaker rupee can keep Indian gold prices firm even if world prices fall.
Dates to watch after the vote
- Fri 6 November, 7:00 PM IST: US October jobs report.
- Tue 10 November, 7:00 PM IST: US October CPI inflation.
- Tue 1 December: Possible Georgia Senate runoff.
- Thu 10 December, 12:30 AM IST: Fed rate decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are the US midterm elections in 2026?
Tuesday, 3 November 2026. In India, results start coming in early on Wednesday, 4 November.
Will gold go up after the US midterm elections?
Not necessarily. A Democratic win is already expected. Gold will likely take its lead from US yields, the jobs report and December rate-hike bets.
How will the US election affect the rupee?
Mostly through oil and the dollar. A Republican sweep or a new oil spike would weigh on the rupee. A calm result with falling oil would help it.
When will we know who controls the US Senate?
Possibly on Wednesday morning, India time. Close races or a Georgia runoff could delay it by days or weeks.
